# Evergreen vs. Cohort

> Understand the difference between Course types and choose the right structure for your teaching style.

Kajabi offers two Course structures: [**Cohort Courses**](https://help.kajabi.com/articles/products/courses/how-to-create-a-cohort-based-course#create-a-cohort-course) and **Evergreen Courses**. Both are built using the same foundational elements — lessons, modules, quizzes, and media — but they deliver content in fundamentally different ways. Choosing the right type shapes both the student experience and how you manage your course long-term.

## Evergreen Courses

An Evergreen Course is always open for enrollment. Customers can purchase the Course and start at any time, progressing through the material at their own pace. There's no set schedule, no cohort groups, and no fixed start date.

### Use cases

* **Self-paced learning** — Students move through the material whenever it fits their schedule
* **Scalable Offers** — Evergreen Courses run without ongoing facilitation, so Heroes can generate revenue without continual live sessions
* **Broad audiences** — Works well when students are joining at different times throughout the year
* **Drip content** — [Drip scheduling](https://help.kajabi.com/articles/products/courses/schedule-and-drip-content-in-courses) allows the release of lessons over time, even without a live cohort

## Cohort Courses

A Cohort Course brings a group of students through the material together, following a predetermined schedule with a defined start date. It's structured around the experience of learning alongside others, with the option to hold live video sessions throughout the course.

**Note:** Cohort Courses are only available on the **Growth** and **Pro** plans. Visit [kajabi.com/pricing](https://kajabi.com/pricing) to compare plans.

### Use cases

* **Live programs and bootcamps** — Courses built around scheduled sessions and group momentum
* **High-touch learning experiences** — When accountability, community, and real-time interaction are core to the transformation
* **Certification programs** — Where all students need to complete the same material within a defined window
* **Premium Offers** — Cohort delivery often commands higher pricing due to the live and community-driven format

## Side-by-side comparison

| **Community feel** | Individual experience | Shared experience with cohort group |
| **Plan availability** | All plans | Growth and Pro only |
| **Can be duplicated** | Yes | No |
| **Can be converted** | N/A | Import from an existing Evergreen Course |

**Note:** You can convert an existing Evergreen Course into a Cohort Course by selecting [**Import existing course**](https://help.kajabi.com/articles/products/courses/how-to-create-a-cohort-based-course#create-a-cohort-course-using-an-existing-evergreen-course) during the cohort setup flow. Converting a Cohort Course back to Evergreen is not currently supported.

## Which one should you choose?

If your Course is designed to be consumed independently and work for you around the clock, Evergreen is the right fit. If the transformation depends on group energy, live interaction, or a shared timeline, Cohort is the better structure.

*Some Heroes run both*: an Evergreen version for ongoing enrollment and a premium Cohort version for customers who want the live experience.

## FAQs

### Can I switch a Cohort Course to an Evergreen Course?

Not directly. You can import an Evergreen Course into a Cohort Course when creating it, but there's no one-click conversion in either direction. If you need an Evergreen version of your cohort material, you would need to create a new Evergreen Course manually.

### Can I duplicate a Cohort Course?

No. Cohort Courses cannot be duplicated at this time. Only Evergreen Courses can be duplicated. If you want to reuse cohort content, create a new Cohort Course and use the [**Import existing course**](https://help.kajabi.com/articles/products/courses/how-to-create-a-cohort-based-course#create-a-cohort-course-using-an-existing-evergreen-course) option to pull in your material.

### Do Cohort Courses work with drip scheduling?

Yes. Cohort Courses use a scheduled start date to control when modules and lessons become available to your cohort group. This is different from Evergreen [drip scheduling](https://help.kajabi.com/articles/products/courses/schedule-and-drip-content-in-courses), which is typically based on the date a customer enrolls.

### Can customers access a Cohort Course on the Kajabi Mobile App?

Yes. Customers can access Course content, including Cohort Courses, through the [Kajabi Mobile App](https://help.kajabi.com/articles/mobile-apps/kajabi-app/downloading-logging-in-to-the-kajabi-mobile-app) or your Branded mobile app.

### What plan do I need to create a Cohort Course?

Cohort Courses require the **Growth** or **Pro** plan. If you're on the Basic plan, you can still create Evergreen Courses. Visit [kajabi.com/pricing](https://kajabi.com/pricing) to review your options.

### Can I run multiple cohorts at the same time?

Yes. You can create and manage multiple cohort groups within a single Cohort Course, each with its own start date and schedule.

### Is there a limit to how many students can be in a cohort?

There is no cohort-specific student cap — your student limits are determined by your Kajabi plan's overall active member limits.
