Learn to customize your optional login requirement for your checkout process.

In this article:

What is a login requirement?

Create a checkout experience for returning customers who already have an account on your site by updating your login requirement.

With the Log in Requirement setting, you can require your returning customers to log in to purchase an Offer or allow them to purchase the Offer before logging into their account.

Login requirement settings:

  • Returning customers don't need to log in
Customers can log in if they wish, but it is not required to complete the purchase flow.
  • Returning customers must log in
Customers will be required to log in before completing the purchase flow.

    • Collect new customer passwords
If you select Returning customers must log in you can require new customers to create a password to complete the purchase flow.
Note:
The login requirement settings are not compatible with the 2016 legacy checkout. If you have checkout pages with the legacy checkout enabled, you will not be able to change the login requirements for your 2016 legacy checkout page.

Why is this important?

If a returning customer has a saved card on file, logging in will automatically populate their card information to quickly checkout.

However, if your returning customer has trouble remembering their login credentials, they will have to go through the process of resetting their password and re-entering the checkout flow. This may interrupt their intentions of purchasing.

Each method has its pros and cons. However, ultimately, we want to give you the option to choose the login requirement that best fits your business and checkout.

What happens with each login requirement setting?

If your checkout page redirects to a landing page after purchase and you have your Log in Requirement set to allow your returning customers to purchase without having to log in, your returning customer will not be required to log into their account before accessing the landing page.
