The paywall feature in your Kajabi mobile app allows you to monetize premium content by requiring users to purchase access before viewing restricted courses and posts. This feature works in both branded mobile apps (BMA) and the consumer member app variant, seamlessly integrating with your existing product offerings and providing a smooth upgrade experience for your members.
BETA:
This feature is being released in phases to ensure stability across all accounts. If you do not see this setting the feature has not been made available to your account yet. Check back at a later time to try the new experience.
What is the Paywall Feature?
The paywall feature creates access restrictions for premium content in your mobile app. When users encounter locked content, they'll see an upgrade prompt that directs them to purchase the required product to unlock access.
The paywall automatically appears when users try to access:
Restricted courses - Courses that require a specific product purchase
Premium posts - Individual posts within courses that are locked
Protected content - Any content configured with access restrictions
How the Paywall Works
When members encounter restricted content, they'll see one of two paywall screens depending on where they are:
On Course Overview Pages: A paywall section appears at the bottom showing "Upgrade to unlock" with a description and "Upgrade now" button
When Navigating to Locked Content: A full-screen modal appears with a dollar sign icon and upgrade messaging, plus the option to dismiss
The Purchase Experience
When members tap "Upgrade now":
They're taken to Safari to complete the secure checkout process
After a successful purchase, they're automatically returned to the app
The app navigates them directly to the content they wanted to access:
The system remembers exactly what content triggered the paywall, so members can pick up right where they left off after purchasing.
Current Limitations
Fixed Messaging: Paywall text and descriptions cannot be customized - they display standard messages
Course Content Only: Paywalls currently work with course-based content and posts
External Checkout: Purchase process opens in external browser, then returns to your app; in app purchases are not currently supported.
Automatic Placement: Paywall location is determined based on where you place it inside your course
FAQs
What happens if a user closes the paywall modal?
Users can dismiss the paywall modal at any time and continue browsing available content. The paywall will reappear when they try to access restricted content again.
Can users preview locked content?
The paywall appears before users can access restricted content, so they cannot preview locked posts or courses. Consider providing clear descriptions and previews in your course overviews.
How does the app handle multiple restricted products?
Each paywall is specific to the content being accessed. If a user tries to access different restricted products, they'll see separate paywalls for each product.
What if the purchase process fails?
If the external checkout process fails or is cancelled, users are returned to the app and can retry the purchase process. The app handles various error scenarios gracefully.
Can I customize the paywall appearance?
No, the paywall appearance cannot be customized. It automatically uses your app's accent colors and typography, but the messaging is fixed and uses predefined localized strings that cannot be changed.
