Build a 404 page

Design a branded broken link error page with the Website Builder

A 404 page is what a visitor sees when they follow a link or type an address that does not exist on the site. Kajabi builds one into every website automatically, so a dead link lands on a branded page with a way back rather than a browser error.

Every Kajabi site has exactly one 404 page and it appears on its own — there is nothing to create or turn on. What you can change is how it looks.

Why 404 pages matter

A web address has three parts: the protocol (https://), the domain name (learningwithme.com), and the path (/store). Get the domain right but the path wrong — https://learningwithme.com/star instead of https://learningwithme.com/store — and the address leads nowhere. That is when the 404 page appears.

404 is the HTTP status code a server returns for a page it cannot find, so it covers every broken or dead link on the site.

Broken links happen for ordinary reasons. Say a landing page at https://learningwithme.com/new-year-promotion is linked from the homepage, and later that landing page is set to Draft while the homepage link stays. Anyone clicking it reaches a dead address. Learn how to publish and draft a page.

The 404 page catches those visitors so they do not bounce off the site. Instead of a browser error they get a branded page and a route back to the rest of the site.

Every Kajabi site ships with a simple 404 page pointing lost visitors back to the homepage:

Customize the 404 page

The 404 page is built from the site's theme, so you customize it in the Website Builder alongside every other page. Depending on the template, you can change the Header and Footer and add Sections and Blocks — the same tools used on any website page.

Because a 404 page works best when it is simple and points clearly back to the site, most of what it needs is Basic Content, an Image or Video, and a Custom Section if the design calls for one.

A site that has just been created shows the default site theme, which is not customizable. Pick a site template that fits the brand to design the 404 page and the rest of the website. Learn to customize a website.

  1. From the Dashboard, click Website, then Website Pages.

  2. Find the 404 page in the list. It is marked with a System label.

  3. Click the page Title to open it in the Website Builder.

Troubleshooting

When a visitor gets a 404 on an address that should be one of the site's own pages, the usual cause is that the page is set to Draft. A Draft page is not publicly reachable, so anyone who visits it sees the 404 page instead.

This is easy to miss, because a draft page still loads normally for you while you are signed in to Kajabi as an admin. Always confirm the address in a private or incognito window.

  1. From the Dashboard, click Website, then Website Pages or Landing Pages.

  2. Find the page and click its status label on the right.

  3. Select Publish.

  4. Copy the page address. On Website Pages, open the more options (...) menu and select Copy URL. On Landing Pages, click the Copy URL icon in the page's row.

  5. Paste the address into a private or incognito browser window to confirm the page loads.

Note: Setting a published page back to Draft breaks every existing link to it, and those links will land on the 404 page. To take a page down temporarily, leave it published and remove the links to it instead.

FAQs

Can the 404 page be published or unpublished?

No. The 404 page is a system page. In the Website Pages list it shows a System label instead of a status dropdown, and the tooltip reads Cannot change statuses of system pages.

Why is there no URL to preview the 404 page?

The 404 page has no address of its own — it only appears when a visitor requests an address that does not resolve. To see the live version, visit any address on the site that does not exist.

Can the 404 page be deleted or duplicated?

No. Delete, Duplicate, Add page to Website, and Edit details are all turned off for it, because every site needs exactly one.

Why does the 404 page show so many page views?

Bots and automated scripts scan domains for common URLs, and each miss registers as a 404 page view. This is normal and does not affect site performance. Learn why 404 page views are elevated.
