Kit (formerly ConvertKit) exports cleanly into Kajabi. One CSV carries your subscribers, their tags, and your custom fields into Contacts, and Kajabi Automations pick up from there; the same tags that drove your Kit automations become triggers here. This page covers the entire process: preparing the export, building the Automation to greet visitors, running the import, and setting up the Automations that will continue to run your list. Your Kit account will still be available while you build and test in Kajabi.

Before you begin

  • Export your subscribers from Kit as a CSV, including tags and any custom fields you want to keep. Kit’s own documentation covers the current export path.
  • Choose a Tag to mark this batch, such as kit-import. Kajabi applies it to every contact in the file, and it becomes the trigger for the Automations you set up.
  • Decide which Email Sequence new visitors should receive. Create it first if it does not exist yet, so the Automation has something to point at. Email Sequences require a paid plan, and trial accounts can send Email Broadcasts.

Prepare the Kit export

  1. Put all of a contact’s tags in one column headed Tags, separated by commas.
  2. Combine First and Last Name into a single Name column, since Kajabi stores one name per contact. Use Google Sheets to combine first and last name.
  3. Give every column a distinct header, because duplicate headers stop the mapping step.
  4. Save the file as a .csv no larger than 30 MB.
Keep any custom field columns in your file. Kajabi maps the ones it recognizes and offers to create the rest during the import, so a Kit field like Purchase Source becomes a Kajabi custom field you can filter and segment on.

Build the welcome Automation before importing

The Tag is added trigger fires the moment a tag lands on a contact. Build this Automation first, and every contact in your file enters the Email Sequence as they import: each one picks up the Tag, the Automation fires, and the sequence starts sending on its schedule.

Build the Automation on the canvas

  1. From the Dashboard, go to Marketing > Automations.
  2. Click + New automation, then select Or, start from scratch.
  3. Click + New trigger and select Tag.
  4. Under When, select Tag is added, then choose the tag you will use when importing contacts.
  5. Click Done.
  6. Click + Then and select Subscribe to an email sequence.
  7. Under Email sequence, choose the sequence you want to send.
  8. Click Done, then Save the Automation.

Build the Automation in the original Automations experience

  1. From the Dashboard, go to Marketing > Automations.
  2. Click + Add Automation.
  3. Under When, select Tag is added, then choose the tag you will use when importing contacts.
  4. Under Then, select Subscribe to an email sequence, then choose the sequence you want to send.
  5. Click Save.

Subscribe contacts who are already imported

If your import has already run, subscribe that batch directly from the Contacts tab.
  1. From the Dashboard, open the Contacts tab.
  2. Click Filters, and in the first dropdown, select Tags.
  3. In the Conditional dropdown, choose Has any.
  4. Under Value, select the Tag used during import.
  5. Click Apply Filters.
  6. Check Select All, then open the Bulk Actions dropdown.
  7. Choose Subscribe to Email Sequence, choose the email sequence you want to use, and click Submit.
The same bulk actions grant Offers, register people for Events, and add or remove Tags across a filtered list, which makes them useful for tidying up any batch after it lands. Perform bulk actions in the Contacts tab

Import contacts and tags into Kajabi

  1. From the Dashboard, open the Contacts tab.
  2. Select All Contacts.
  3. Click + Add contacts.
  4. Select Import CSV, then click Upload File.
  5. Choose your .csv, then click Continue to Upload. To paste rows in directly instead, select Copy/paste from file and click Continue to Import Actions.
  6. Next, under Map Columns, review how Kajabi matched each column header. Confirm your tag column is mapped to Tags, and use Existing Field, New Field, or Skip Column to place anything else.
  7. Under Bulk Actions, use Add tags to apply your batch tag to everyone in the file. Grant offers gives access to an Offer at the same time, and Subscribe to marketing emails adds contacts to your marketing list.
  8. Review the summary under Confirm and start the import.
Warning: Only check Subscribe to marketing emails for contacts who explicitly agreed to hear from you. Importing a list as subscribed without that permission puts you outside CAN-SPAM and the other laws that apply to your business.
Kajabi emails you when the import finishes, with a count of contacts created and updated and a link to a file listing any rows it could not accept and why. Contacts are matched on email address, so running the import again updates the people already there instead of duplicating them.
Note: You can import up to 40,000 contacts per day. Split a larger list into daily batches, each carrying the same batch tag.

Recreate Kit automations with Kajabi triggers and actions

Your tags arrive on the right contacts, so the logic you ran in Kit has the same signals to work from in Kajabi. An Automation pairs a When trigger with a Then action, and an Only if condition narrows when it runs. The patterns most Kit accounts depend on each map to one pairing: Tags are only the entry point. Automations also trigger:
  • Form submissions
  • Offer purchases and grants
  • Email opens and link clicks
  • Quiz and Assessment results
  • Lesson completions
  • Event registrations
  • Contact inactivity at 7, 30, 60, or 90 days
Alongside tagging and sequence subscriptions, the actions available include:
  • Sending an email or an SMS
  • Granting or revoking an Offer
  • Sending a single-use coupon
  • Sending a certificate
  • Adding someone to a private Community channel
Note: Only if conditions are available on the Growth and Pro Plans. On the Basic Plan, an Automation pairs one When trigger with one Then action. Build Automations from Marketing > Automations, or from inside the Form, Offer, Email Campaign, or Course Lesson each one belongs to.

Branching and multi-step Automations

Kajabi’s upgraded Automations experience builds on a visual canvas, where one Automation holds multiple actions, branching logic, and wait steps, so a Kit automation that sends buyers one way and everyone else another becomes a single flow. On the original experience, chain Automations together with Tags. A Tag is added trigger paired with an Add a tag action hands a contact from one Automation to the next, which covers most branching. Keep Kit connected during the migration

Kajabi integrates with Kit directly, so your Kajabi Forms can keep feeding your Kit list while you build. The integration is labeled ConvertKit in Kajabi.
  1. Open the Settings tab and select Third Party Integrations.
  2. Toggle on ConvertKit and paste your API Key.
  3. On any Kajabi Form, check Send the contact to a third party email provider, select ConvertKit, and add your Form ID.
Submissions to that Form reach both platforms, which lets you verify your Kajabi Automations against live traffic before Kit comes offline.
Note: If double opt-in is on in both platforms, submitters receive two confirmation emails. Turn it off on one side while you run both. Use ConvertKit with Kajabi

FAQs

Does migrating from Kit break tagging and automation workflows?

No. Tags import alongside your contacts and land on the right people, so your segmentation arrives intact and every Automation you set up in Kajabi has the same signals to fire on. Kajabi covers the tag-driven logic Kit accounts run on with the trigger Tag is added and the actions Add a tag, Remove a tag, Subscribe to an email sequence, and Unsubscribe from an email sequence.

Do custom fields in Kit migrate to Kajabi?

Yes. Keep the columns in your CSV and map them on the Map Columns step. Kajabi matches the fields it recognizes and prompts you to create the rest as new custom fields, which are then available for filtering, segmenting, and Only if conditions.

Should the Automation in Kajabi be built before or after the import?

Before. The Tag is added trigger fires as each tag is applied, so an Automation saved beforehand catches the whole batch as it imports. If the import already ran, filter the Contacts tab by that tag and use the Bulk Actions dropdown to subscribe everyone to the Email Sequence at once.

Where does email content go when migrating from Kit to Kajabi?

Email content is created in Kajabi as Email Sequences for anything on a schedule and Email Broadcasts for one-off sends, both from Marketing > Email Campaigns. Copy your Kit copy into the Kajabi editor, then point your Automations at the sequences you build.

How many contacts can be imported at once?

A CSV can be up to 30 MB, and up to 40,000 contacts can be imported per day. Split larger lists into daily batches.

Can Kit keep running during the migration?

Yes. An import to Kajabi changes nothing in your Kit account, and the ConvertKit integration keeps Kajabi Forms feeding your Kit list while you build and test.
